International Women in Engineering Day 2025
International Women in Engineering Day, 23rd June 2025, brought to you by Women’s Engineering Society (WES) will celebrate its 12th year in 2025 and will once again be promoting the amazing work that women engineers across the globe are doing. This year’s theme is #TogetherWeEngineer.
At Synergi Recruitment, we’re proud to support this important movement. But while celebration is important, so is action. Employers in manufacturing, production, and engineering have a critical role to play in building more inclusive teams. We’ve put our decades of experience in engineering recruitment into use; to summarise some of the key facts and provide actionable insights for UK businesses.
Latest data on Women in Engineering in the UK
The Gender Gap in Engineering
The latest data from EngineeringUK (2024) shows that only 16.9% of engineers in the UK are women, compared to 56% in other occupations. While this is an increase from 10.5% a decade ago, progress remains slow in comparison to other neighbouring countries. Countries like Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Bulgaria have over 50% female representation in engineering roles according to Eurostat (2023). The UK’s gender diversity in STEM has a long way to go.
According to the Office for National Statistics (2024), the median gender pay gap in science, research, engineering and technology professionals is 10.8%, compared to the UK’s overall gap of 13.1%. Engineering employment is going in the right direction for closing the gender pay gap. However, we have seen a spike in the number of women aged 35 – 44 who are leaving engineering roles.
